Somatic Experiencing trauma healing
I have been in school for Somatic Experiencing (SE) over the course of this past year (although a recipient for many years). I have begun to facilitate sessions and the results are truly magical. ✨
SE is a trauma-based healing modality that helps integrate a deregulated nervous system with the body and mind. Trauma happens when a normal nervous system response (like fight, flight or freeze) does not get completed. If flight, fight or freeze does not complete, our nervous system remains too turned-on or too turned-off, depending on which response it got stuck in.
We want to complete these trauma responses in a well facilitated way, otherwise we are likely to reenact them in our day-to-day life, often playing them out with the people we are closet to. Incomplete trauma responses can come out sideways, harming ourselves and others. SE is a way to do this work in an integrative, grounded and safe way. We can heal within a professional container, rather than reenact our wounds with others.
Nearly everyone has some degree of trauma. What may be traumatic for one individual may not be for another. What gets defined as trauma is merely based on the sensitivity of one's nervous system. Some nervous systems can bounce back after something seemingly tragic, while other nervous systems may remain deregulated after an instance that may seem small in comparison. Trauma could range from the all-too-common human experience of being picked on as a kid, to the more extreme circumstance of physical abuse. Yet what may not be a big deal for someone, may have life-altering affects on another...and vice versa.
The good thing is that Somatic Experiencing is an effective way to heal our nervous system, so we can walk in the world with more purposeful, aligned integrity.
